Testament [USA]

BIOGRAPHY
TESTAMENT fue una de las primeras bandas de thrash metal que emergieron de San Francisco Bay Areaen los 80. Originalmente formados como LEGACY en 1983 por Eric Peterson (guitarra rítmica), Derrick Ramirez (guitarra) y Louie Clemente (batería), la formación se completaba con el vocalista Steve Souza y el bajista Greg Christian. Ramirez fue más tarde reemplazado por Alex Skolnick (guitarra solista). Souza pronto les dejó para unirse a EXODUS y sugirió que Chuck Billy se convirtiera en el nuevo frontman. La banda cambió el nombre a TESTAMENT tres años más tarde, mientras grababa su álbum debut en Ithaca, Nueva York.

"The Legacy" fue una brutal introducción de TESTAMENT en 1987, poniéndoles al frente de la floreciente escena del thrash metal. Le siguió el EP "Live At Eindhoven", que se grabó en el Dynamo Festival, en Holanda. "The New Order" en 1988 fue bien recibido produciendo uno de los clásicos de la banda "Disciples Of The Watch". Después llegó el exitoso "Practice What You Preach" en 1989, y después el "Souls Of Black" en 1990, coincidiendo con la gira europea 'Clash Of The Titans' con SLAYER, MEGADETH y SUICIDAL TENDENCIES.

Después de "The Ritual" en 1992, Skolnick, quien había perdido interés en el metal puro, decidió hacer jazz y abandonó la banda. Clemente también lo dejó. "Return To Apocalyptic City" en 1993 trajo a Glen Alvelais (guitarra, ex- FORBIDDEN) a las filas de la banda, y sustituyó temporalmente a Clemente, Paul Bostaph (ex- FORBIDDEN, SLAYER). James Murphy (ex- DEATH, OBITUARY, DISINCARNATE, CANCER) pronto siguió los pasos de Alvelais haciendo de guitarrista solista en "Low" en 1994, ya que John Tempesta (ex- EXODUS) sería batería. Tempesta más tarde abandonó la banda para unirse a WHITE ZOMBIE, y fue reemplazado por John Dette (ex- EVIL DEAD). "Live At The Fillmore" se editó en 1995, después Dette abandonó la banda en 1996 para unirse a SLAYER. "The Best Of Testament" se editó en 1996.

"Demonic", que fue grabado en los estudios Driftwood de TESTAMENT, se editó en 1997. James Murphy y Greg Christian habían abandonado la banda y fueron reemplazados por Glen Alvelais y Derrick Ramirez (bajo). Gene Hoglan (batería, ex- DEATH, DARK ANGEL) demostró su talento con la batería. "Signs Of Chaos", un disco recopilatorio, se editó en 1997.

Dave Lombardo (ex- SLAYER, GRIP INC.) se unió oficialmente a la banda. James Murphy volvió, y al bajo, el legendario Steve DiGiorgio (ex- DEATH, CONTROL DENIED, SADUS). "The Gathering" nació en 1999. James Murphy se fue duramente, por razones de enfermedad. Steve Smyth (ex-VICIOUS RUMORS) se convirtió en 'guitarrista de la gira', mas tarde sería invitado a quedarse como miembro permanente. Lombardo abandonó poco después, no siendo capaz de compaginar la banda con sus demás proyectos. En 2000, Jon Allen (batería, ex- SADUS) se unió a la banda.

Tras la exitosa gira mundial "Riding The Snake" para promocionar "The Gathering", el vocalista Billy fue diagnosticado con una rara variedad de cancer llamada 'germ cell seminoma' en marzo de 2001. Debido a su enfermedad y la dureza de su tratamiento, Billy se ofreció para ser vocalista en "First Strike Still Deadly", disco de clásicos de TESTAMENT, como disco de reunión, trayendo a Alex Skolnick y John Tempesta para dicha grabación.

Billy se recuperó. Una completa gira por EEUU y Europa que comenzó a final de 2002, se programó. Continuaría hasta el verano de 2003. En 2004, el guitarrista Steve Smyth abandonó la banda para unirse a NEVERMORE, y "Metal Mike" Chlasciak le siguió.
